There is nothing else quite like it in world affairs – two countries who declare themselves as allies while one of them regularly conducts unsanctioned military operations inside the other. Pakistan is a geopolitically strategic nation. One of the world’s most populous Muslim-majority countries, and the only Muslim nation with nuclear weapons. By dint of location and history, Pakistan sits at the center of many of the world’s most volatile issues. Yet, it has vexed American policy makers, of both parties, for many years with this strange ongoing reality of an “alliance” without much shared trust and few fully agreed common interests. To present his point of view on these matters, the Council hosts Munir Akram, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United Nations, capping a distinguished diplomatic career beginning in 1967.
