Today, with roughly 2.2 million people behind bars in the United States, an increase of 1.9 million since 1972, the need for criminal justice reform seems to be in the headlines more and more. But the topic of criminal justice reform is a heated one. The issues are many—from how to better police our cities and neighborhoods to whether mandatory minimum sentencing is effective; from how to enact successful rehabilitation programs to how best to reduce incarceration and crime at the same time. It’s no wonder the debate over criminal justice reform is polarizing. To choose only one of the many topics, the Council’s Young Friends Program Series is hosting an event about the Pennsylvania Innocence Project, which works to exonerate those convicted of crimes they did not commit and to prevent innocent people from being convicted. While this is just one aspect of the criminal justice system, it is one that affects the lives of people across the country who have been wrongly convicted. Join the Council to learn about how the PA Innocence Project works to secure the exoneration, release from imprisonment, and restoration to society of persons who are innocent and have been wrongly convicted and its work to strengthen and improve the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in Pennsylvania through public education and advocacy. Participating in the discussion is Marissa Boyers Bluestine, Executive Director of the PA Innocence Project and one of the clients of the PA Innocence Project.
